Notifications: Clicking on notification does nothing until marked as read

I have an issue with notifications.
In an automation, I send out an internal notification to the user assigned to the contact, I also create a task for that user. When the notification comes in, I click on the bell icon and then click on the notification expecting to be taken to the Conversations tab - but instead clicking does nothing. It's only when I click "mark all as read" and THEN click on the notification does it actually send me to the conversation. This happens for all custom internal notifications that get sent out.
I then tried enabling "notification when task gets assigned". This results in redundant notifications (1 for the task and 1 for the custom internal notification) and neither of then work when clicked on UNTIL I mark all as read and only then does clicking on the notification actually take me to where it should.
