When you have the 'Create Contact on Partial Submission' option set, a new contact is created as soon as the survey is started with and custom fields being populated as the survey progresses.

BUT: these fields are not exposed to the survey so we can't use. for example, {{contact.custom_field_name}} within the survey to display answers from previous questions.
