Emails sent via Campaigns showing up in my inbox as unread?

Okay, this is ..... challenging.
Apparently, emails that I send via a campaign now show up in Conversations as unread if the recipient hasn't opened it?
WHY??
I can track open rates/clicks/etc through the campaigns. I do NOT need this cluttering my inbox. How do companies with THOUSANDS of people on their lists navigate this?
And no bulk 'Mark Read' option?
Am I missing something?????
