All active workflows are not displaying in the Contacts smart list when that column is selected

Problem: When the Active Workflows column is added to the Contacts Smart List, not all of the workflows that are actually active are displaying for all contacts. For example, the list says that there are 2 active workflows for a particular contact, but if I click on that contact and look, there are 4 active workflows that are currently active.
Why this is a problem: this is inaccurate data reporting and is preventing the data to be used to validate or correct issues. For example downloading the data, analyzing it, and then making an necessary changes....versus having to go into every single contact record and check (which is a huge waste of time)
Expectation: data is accurately reflected in the columns in smart lists. That when columns are selected, the data populates quickly as is accurate, and the downloaded reports can be trusted and used to analyze business related questions and make decisions.
