This seems like a bug, I feel like it should be possible to select contacts for testing email actions like how the workflow test works. For example, if I test an email linked with a contact who has a booked appointment, the details don't get populated if they are inserted as custom values variables. They only work when we test the workflow and are able to select a contact to run through the workflow.
