I would like to suggest the developer team to allow the user to bulk assign followers under opportunity. As you can see in the picture, the stage section is required where as each contact has their own stages. It's not practical to change for every contact.

Mu suggestion is to make the section not required. So, user can add followers in bulk (50 contacts at a time) without caring about the stages.
