Ability to trigger automations off Opportunity Custom Date fields

My client has added Target Close Date and other Due Dates related to an Opportunity to the Opportunity Record. Adding the custom date field is possible, but using the Opportunity Custom Date Field as a Trigger is not possible.
This means that we cannot trigger date based actions like tasks, internal communications, or emails.
Enterprise sales require date based triggers on opportunities to manage RFPs and other enterprise sales activities.
Government Sales also have a lot of date based activities, which would benefit from this.
